International Day of Friendship

🌍 Celebrating the International Day of Friendship

Fostering Compassion, Connection, and Care in Nigeria
✍🏽 By Susan Omenuko

On July 30th, the world comes together to mark the International Day of Friendship, a UN-recognised initiative that highlights the powerful role of friendship in fostering peace, understanding, and solidarity among individuals and communities worldwide.

💚 Why Friendship Matters—Now More Than Ever

In Nigeria, a richly diverse nation with over 250 ethnic groups and multiple religious communities, the principles behind this day hold special significance. As our country navigates challenges such as mental health stigma, economic pressures, and social fragmentation, nurturing bonds of empathy and mutual respect has become not just desirable but essential.

Friendship is not merely a social nicety. It’s a lifeline, a source of strength, and a vital ingredient for emotional wellbeing, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable who are most at risk of loneliness.

👵🏽 EOON Care: Where Friendship Meets Professional Care

At EOON Care, we understand that true care goes beyond routine tasks. It is grounded in companionship, trust, and human connection. Our caregivers are more than helpers—they are companions trained to listen actively, engage meaningfully, and provide emotional support.

Whether through a comforting conversation, a shared meal, or simply being present, our services help bridge the emotional gap created by distance, changing family dynamics, or the demands of urban life in cities like Lagos and Abuja.

This approach reflects our core belief in person-centred care, where dignity, respect, and meaningful relationships guide everything we do.

🤝 Friendship in Action

Our clients are not just service users—they are individuals with rich histories, dreams, and emotions. We use tools like the “About Me” booklet during admissions to learn their stories and build connections rooted in genuine interest.

From home visits to our Celine Care Centre in New Owerri, EOON Care promotes intentional companionship. We encourage daily virtual family calls, group activities, and community engagement, helping residents maintain a sense of identity and belonging.

🌱 A Culture of Connectedness

In both Nigeria and around the world, this year’s International Day of Friendship reminds us to check in with our neighbours, spend time with older relatives, and foster an inclusive culture of care. Organisations like EOON Care play a vital role in modelling how professional services can nurture the healing power of connection—especially for those who need it most.

🌍 World Hepatitis Day 2025: One Life, One Liver – A Call to Action for Nigeria

🌍 World Hepatitis Day 2025: One Life, One Liver – A Call to Action for Nigeria 🇳🇬

By Susan Omenuko | EOON Care

Every year on 28 July, the global health community comes together to mark World Hepatitis Day, a vital moment to spotlight one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. The 2025 theme, “One Life, One Liver”, is a timely call to safeguard liver health and prioritise access to hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment—especially here in Nigeria, where millions remain at risk.

Understanding Hepatitis: A Silent Epidemic

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections—types A through E. Hepatitis B and C are particularly dangerous, often leading to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2024), over 350 million people worldwide are living with chronic hepatitis B or C.

In Nigeria, the numbers are stark:
🔹 8.1% of the population lives with hepatitis B
🔹 1.1% live with hepatitis C (NCDC, 2023)

Despite the availability of vaccines and treatment, awareness remains low. Many people are unaware they’re infected until symptoms become life-threatening. In rural communities and underserved urban areas, access to screening, care, and accurate information is still limited.

EOON Care’s Role: Educating, Screening, Supporting

At EOON Care, we believe every life matters—especially the lives of older adults and those with chronic health conditions, who are often at higher risk of hepatitis-related complications. Our person-centred approach to caregiving means we integrate hepatitis awareness into daily care practices.

Through our home visit programmes and residential services, our trained caregivers are educated to:

✅ Recognise early signs of liver disease
✅ Provide education about hepatitis transmission and prevention
✅ Facilitate referrals to testing and treatment providers

By embedding public health education into elder care, we reduce stigma, promote early detection, and support families with accurate, culturally sensitive information.

Community Action: Awareness and Partnership

EOON Care proudly partners with local health authorities, NGOs, and religious organisations to mark World Hepatitis Day each year. Our activities include:

🩺 Mobile testing and vaccination drives
📢 Public awareness events in markets, churches, and schools
📚 Caregiver training sessions rooted in infection control and safeguarding (aligned with the UK’s Care Certificate standards)

In Nigeria, myths and misconceptions about hepatitis abound. Some believe it is caused by spiritual forces or inherited curses. These harmful beliefs delay timely medical intervention. That’s why trusted caregivers and community-based educators are crucial in combating misinformation.

"One Liver, One Life": What This Means for Elder Care

The 2025 theme is a poignant reminder that our liver is essential, not just for detoxifying the body but for sustaining life itself. For older adults managing multiple health conditions, prioritising liver health is essential. Hepatitis screening should be part of routine care for anyone over 60, particularly those with histories of blood transfusions, unregulated medical procedures, or long-term medication use.

EOON Care’s blended model—offering both clinical support and companionship—demonstrates how elder care can also serve as a public health intervention. By treating our clients with dignity, providing culturally sensitive health education, and supporting their families, we are helping to rewrite the hepatitis story in Nigeria.

💚 Every Life Counts. Every Liver Matters.

World Hepatitis Day is more than a date—it’s a movement. At EOON Care, we are proud to be part of that movement, working daily to educate, empower, and protect Nigeria’s ageing population. Whether through a home visit, caregiver training, or community outreach, our goal remains the same: to build healthier lives, one person at a time.

🌊 World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July): A Wake-Up Call for Water Safety in Nigeria

🌊 World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July): A Wake-Up Call for Water Safety in Nigeria

By Susan Omenuko | EOON Care

Every year on 25th July, the world pauses to mark World Drowning Prevention Day, an initiative of the United Nations General Assembly. It’s not just another awareness day—it’s a solemn reminder of a silent but deadly epidemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 236,000 lives are lost to drowning annually, making it one of the top ten leading causes of death among children and young people aged 1–24 years.

For Nigeria, where water safety education and emergency services are not yet widely accessible, this global observance is not just symbolic—it’s a call to action.

🇳🇬 The Nigerian Reality: A Hidden Public Health Crisis

Nigeria's natural landscape is dotted with rivers, streams, open wells, and unguarded water bodies, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. These are often lifelines for everyday life—used for cooking, bathing, and travel—but they also pose grave risks.

Children are especially vulnerable. Inadequate adult supervision, lack of swimming skills, overcrowded boats, and flood-prone coastal states like Lagos, Rivers, and Bayelsa all combine to make drowning a daily threat.

The WHO’s 2021 Global Drowning Report reveals that the African region has the highest drowning rates in the world, yet this issue remains grossly under-reported and under-prioritised in health planning.

🤝 How EOON Care Can Lead Change

At EOON Care, our mission to provide person-centred care, supervision, and companionship places us in a powerful position to champion drowning prevention, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and persons with disabilities.

Our Caregiver Network Is Key

Through our caregiver training programmes, aligned with both Nigerian standards and the UK Care Certificate, we equip care assistants with critical knowledge on:

  • Risk assessment around water

  • Infection control and emergency hygiene

  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults and children

These skills can easily be expanded to include basic water safety, supervision near water bodies, and emergency response tips—simple interventions that save lives.

🛟 Prevention Starts at Home and in the Community

EOON Care can play a frontline role by:

  • Integrating water safety awareness into home visit routines and induction training.

  • Educating families during care assessments on securing wells, fencing off water access points, and using child-safe containers.

  • Collaborating with NGOs and government agencies to deliver community-led drowning prevention initiatives—from awareness walks to school-based swim safety programmes.

We believe that drowning is not fate—it is preventable. Our presence in homes, schools, and care settings allows us to shift public perception and introduce real change.

💙 A Collective Responsibility

World Drowning Prevention Day is not just for policymakers or first responders—it’s for all of us. As Nigeria continues to face the challenges of urban expansion, climate change, and poor drainage systems, we must all take proactive steps to protect our most vulnerable.

At EOON Care, we are proud to be part of the solution. Through education, supervision, and partnership, we are committed to building safer communities and saving lives—one household at a time.

Community Health Is Local: Why Imo’s Future Depends on Preventive Care at the Grassroots

Community Health Is Local: Why Imo’s Future Depends on Preventive Care at the Grassroots

By NOM | EOON Care

Health systems thrive when they start from the community. Across the world, countries that invest in preventive care at the local level not only achieve better outcomes but also stronger economies, healthier youth, and more resilient public services.

In Imo State, a growing conversation is underway. As election campaigns highlight the need for healthcare reform and economic revival, one area gaining attention is how we strengthen care at the local level. While hospitals and infrastructure projects attract headlines, the real breakthrough may lie elsewhere: in community-led, preventive health services delivered close to home.

One candidate making this a central focus is Dr Chima Amadi. His 8-point agenda proposes a new direction for Imo State, rooted in job creation, public-private partnerships, and improved access to healthcare through community-based models.

The Community Health Acceleration Programme (CHAP) aligns with that vision. Designed as a pilot initiative by EOON Care, CHAP aims to demonstrate how trained health coaches, drawn from local communities, can provide early intervention, support chronic disease prevention, and connect more residents to basic health services and insurance.

CHAP does not rely on new hospitals or expensive builds. Instead, it focuses on mobilising the people already closest to the problem—and giving them the tools to be part of the solution.

This approach could mean:

  • Regular home-based health checks and wellness education

  • Jobs for young people as community health workers

  • Better uptake of the state’s proposed insurance scheme

  • Early detection of common conditions before they escalate

This approach supports elder wellbeing through preventive contact, home visits, early intervention, and social linkage

While the political path forward is still taking shape, one thing is clear: any serious health reform must reach into communities, not just policy rooms. That’s where real change happens.

With delivery experience from the NHS and a health coaching model adapted for local realities, the team behind CHAP is ready to support whichever administration shares this commitment.

Because preventive care isn’t a campaign promise—it’s a smart, scalable strategy for protecting lives and livelihoods.

🌍 World Population Day 2025: Empowering Generations: Why Nigeria Must Prioritise Elder Care Now

🌍 World Population Day 2025

Empowering Generations: Why Nigeria Must Prioritise Elder Care Now

✍🏽 By Susan Omenuko | EOON Care

Every 11th of July, World Population Day offers a moment of reflection—a chance for nations to assess how well their development strategies are serving people at every stage of life. First introduced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, the day is more relevant than ever as the global population now exceeds 8 billion people.

In Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, with over 223 million residents and an annual growth rate of 2.4% (World Bank, 2023), this observance is a stark reminder that sustainable development must be inclusive of all age groups, not just the young.

👵🏾 The Overlooked Majority: Our Ageing Population

Nigeria is often described as a “young country”—and demographically, this is true. But beneath the surface lies a quietly expanding elderly population. Advances in medicine and life expectancy mean more people are living into their 70s and 80s, yet few policies and services are in place to support them.

Many older Nigerians face neglect, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of social support. In rural areas, informal care is the norm, placing an enormous burden on families—especially women and young carers. Without robust elder care systems, both the older generation and their caregivers suffer.

🤝 EOON Care: Creating a Better Future for Seniors

This year’s World Population Day theme—“Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world”—may seem youth-focused at first glance. But it speaks to intergenerational equity: building a world where every age group has the resources to thrive, from childhood through old age.

At EOON Care, we believe that a fair and hopeful world must include our elders. That’s why we’ve built an integrated care model offering:

  • 🏠 Residential and respite care at Celine Care Centre

  • 🏡 Home caregiving and personal support

  • 🧠 Wellness, companionship, and therapy programmes

  • 📢 Advocacy for improved elder policy and public awareness

  • 🏡 Verified register of caregivers

We champion person-centred care, dignity, and family involvement—because growing old should never mean being forgotten.

📈 The Bigger Picture: Why Elder Care Matters for Population Planning

Sustainable population management isn’t just about family planning or fertility rates. It’s about creating inclusive systems that serve everyone, especially those most at risk of being left behind.

Caring for our ageing population isn't charity—it’s smart policy. Older adults bring wisdom, cultural memory, and resilience to our communities. When they are supported, families are stronger, healthcare costs are better managed, and communities are more compassionate.

📣 Call to Action: Let’s Build an Age-Inclusive Nigeria

On this World Population Day, EOON Care urges:

  • Government agencies to develop a national framework for elder care

  • Communities and faith groups to include older members in planning

  • NGOs and healthcare partners to invest in training and support for carers

  • Families to start conversations about ageing and future planning

A society that values all generations is a society prepared for a just, sustainable future.
