🌍 World Population Day 2025

Empowering Generations: Why Nigeria Must Prioritise Elder Care Now

✍🏽 By Susan Omenuko | EOON Care

Every 11th of July, World Population Day offers a moment of reflection—a chance for nations to assess how well their development strategies are serving people at every stage of life. First introduced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, the day is more relevant than ever as the global population now exceeds 8 billion people.

In Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, with over 223 million residents and an annual growth rate of 2.4% (World Bank, 2023), this observance is a stark reminder that sustainable development must be inclusive of all age groups, not just the young.

👵🏾 The Overlooked Majority: Our Ageing Population

Nigeria is often described as a “young country”—and demographically, this is true. But beneath the surface lies a quietly expanding elderly population. Advances in medicine and life expectancy mean more people are living into their 70s and 80s, yet few policies and services are in place to support them.

Many older Nigerians face neglect, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of social support. In rural areas, informal care is the norm, placing an enormous burden on families—especially women and young carers. Without robust elder care systems, both the older generation and their caregivers suffer.

🤝 EOON Care: Creating a Better Future for Seniors

This year’s World Population Day theme—“Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world”—may seem youth-focused at first glance. But it speaks to intergenerational equity: building a world where every age group has the resources to thrive, from childhood through old age.

At EOON Care, we believe that a fair and hopeful world must include our elders. That’s why we’ve built an integrated care model offering:

  • 🏠 Residential and respite care at Celine Care Centre

  • 🏡 Home caregiving and personal support

  • 🧠 Wellness, companionship, and therapy programmes

  • 📢 Advocacy for improved elder policy and public awareness

  • 🏡 Verified register of caregivers

We champion person-centred care, dignity, and family involvement—because growing old should never mean being forgotten.

📈 The Bigger Picture: Why Elder Care Matters for Population Planning

Sustainable population management isn’t just about family planning or fertility rates. It’s about creating inclusive systems that serve everyone, especially those most at risk of being left behind.

Caring for our ageing population isn't charity—it’s smart policy. Older adults bring wisdom, cultural memory, and resilience to our communities. When they are supported, families are stronger, healthcare costs are better managed, and communities are more compassionate.

📣 Call to Action: Let’s Build an Age-Inclusive Nigeria

On this World Population Day, EOON Care urges:

  • Government agencies to develop a national framework for elder care

  • Communities and faith groups to include older members in planning

  • NGOs and healthcare partners to invest in training and support for carers

  • Families to start conversations about ageing and future planning

A society that values all generations is a society prepared for a just, sustainable future.
