🌍 World Hepatitis Day 2025: One Life, One Liver – A Call to Action for Nigeria

🌍 World Hepatitis Day 2025: One Life, One Liver – A Call to Action for Nigeria 🇳🇬

By Susan Omenuko | EOON Care

Every year on 28 July, the global health community comes together to mark World Hepatitis Day, a vital moment to spotlight one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. The 2025 theme, “One Life, One Liver”, is a timely call to safeguard liver health and prioritise access to hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment—especially here in Nigeria, where millions remain at risk.

Understanding Hepatitis: A Silent Epidemic

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections—types A through E. Hepatitis B and C are particularly dangerous, often leading to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2024), over 350 million people worldwide are living with chronic hepatitis B or C.

In Nigeria, the numbers are stark:
🔹 8.1% of the population lives with hepatitis B
🔹 1.1% live with hepatitis C (NCDC, 2023)

Despite the availability of vaccines and treatment, awareness remains low. Many people are unaware they’re infected until symptoms become life-threatening. In rural communities and underserved urban areas, access to screening, care, and accurate information is still limited.

EOON Care’s Role: Educating, Screening, Supporting

At EOON Care, we believe every life matters—especially the lives of older adults and those with chronic health conditions, who are often at higher risk of hepatitis-related complications. Our person-centred approach to caregiving means we integrate hepatitis awareness into daily care practices.

Through our home visit programmes and residential services, our trained caregivers are educated to:

✅ Recognise early signs of liver disease
✅ Provide education about hepatitis transmission and prevention
✅ Facilitate referrals to testing and treatment providers

By embedding public health education into elder care, we reduce stigma, promote early detection, and support families with accurate, culturally sensitive information.

Community Action: Awareness and Partnership

EOON Care proudly partners with local health authorities, NGOs, and religious organisations to mark World Hepatitis Day each year. Our activities include:

🩺 Mobile testing and vaccination drives
📢 Public awareness events in markets, churches, and schools
📚 Caregiver training sessions rooted in infection control and safeguarding (aligned with the UK’s Care Certificate standards)

In Nigeria, myths and misconceptions about hepatitis abound. Some believe it is caused by spiritual forces or inherited curses. These harmful beliefs delay timely medical intervention. That’s why trusted caregivers and community-based educators are crucial in combating misinformation.

"One Liver, One Life": What This Means for Elder Care

The 2025 theme is a poignant reminder that our liver is essential, not just for detoxifying the body but for sustaining life itself. For older adults managing multiple health conditions, prioritising liver health is essential. Hepatitis screening should be part of routine care for anyone over 60, particularly those with histories of blood transfusions, unregulated medical procedures, or long-term medication use.

EOON Care’s blended model—offering both clinical support and companionship—demonstrates how elder care can also serve as a public health intervention. By treating our clients with dignity, providing culturally sensitive health education, and supporting their families, we are helping to rewrite the hepatitis story in Nigeria.

💚 Every Life Counts. Every Liver Matters.

World Hepatitis Day is more than a date—it’s a movement. At EOON Care, we are proud to be part of that movement, working daily to educate, empower, and protect Nigeria’s ageing population. Whether through a home visit, caregiver training, or community outreach, our goal remains the same: to build healthier lives, one person at a time.
